Presented by: Steven Powell, Sales Director, Deepbridge
CPD Eligible Time: 45 mins

Designed as structured learning for financial advisers looking to deepen their understanding of the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS).

Below are the key learning outcomes from the webinar:

Key themes included the purpose and structure of the Seed Enterprise Investment Scheme (SEIS), its role in supporting investment into early-stage UK businesses and its contribution to entrepreneurship and innovation across the UK economy. Attendees reviewed the evolution of the scheme, significant legislative developments and the key differences between SEIS and EIS, including company eligibility requirements and investment limits.

Discussion focused on the range of tax reliefs available through SEIS, including income tax relief, carry-back, Capital Gains Tax reinvestment relief, loss relief and potential Business Relief benefits. The webinar also examined the practical process of claiming reliefs, the importance of SEIS3 certificates, relevant timescales and common misconceptions surrounding tax relief eligibility and administration.

Practical case studies demonstrated how SEIS can be incorporated into financial planning conversations for a variety of client circumstances. Examples included additional-rate taxpayers, clients affected by pension tapering, individuals with Capital Gains Tax liabilities and those considering inheritance tax planning. Particular attention was given to the interaction between investment outcomes, diversification and the tax reliefs available through SEIS investing.

The webinar concluded with an examination of the risks and practical considerations associated with SEIS investing. Topics included liquidity, investment failure, loss of tax relief, long-term investment horizons and the importance of diversification. Attendees also considered client suitability, capacity for loss, risk tolerance, compliance requirements and the factors advisers should evaluate when discussing or recommending higher-risk tax-efficient investments.
